The scintillating summer sound of willow on leather echoed around Metro Park over Labour Weekend as Hibiscus Coast Cricket Club (HCCC) got their One Day league season underway. Unfortunately for the two home teams, the Senior Sixth Grade team and the One Day 4A team, they both spent more time chasing leather than they did wielding the willow!
The Senior Sixth Grade team batted first in their match against the Birkenhead Apricots, struggling against some decent swing bowling and only managing to score 89 runs before being bowled out in the 27th over. Birkenhead faced some lively bowling early on in their innings but then settled down and comfortably scored 92 runs within 23 overs, for the loss of only five wickets.
The One Day 4A team lost by 3 wickets against a rowdy Auckland University.
In cricketing action further afield, the HCCC Premier Reserve team lost their One Day Minor Championship match by 3 wickets away against Howick-Pakuranga. HCCC batted first, scoring 113 runs before being bowled out in the 49th over. Howick-Pakuranga reached 114 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in the 31st over.
